The Secondhand Doll, by Phoebe Johnson

The Secondhand Doll

By Phoebe Johnson

Aiti found me in a junk box at a secondhand store.
I didn’t know who I was or where I came from.

Aiti picked me up and said, ”You’ll be perfect.”

I was dirty and my hair was a mess.

“We’ll get you all fixed up,” she said.

Aiti cut off my hair. . “Now let’s try on some wigs,” she said.

We tried a short blond wig.
“Oh No!” she gasped. “You’re not a blond. We’ll try on Lara’s old wig.”

Lara was Aiti’s first doll. She is a fixed-up doll and has a new wig.

Aiti put Lara’s old wig on me.  “Yes, this is better,” she said.

She glued the wig to my head. I wasn’t sure she knew what she was doing.

“This hair is long and wavy. It doesn’t look like a secondhand wig.” Aiti said.

I love my new hair!

Aiti made me a new dress and bonnet.

She named me Rose.

Aiti has a whole family of dolls now but Lara and I were her first.
I like being part of her doll family.
